Lessons

UPDATE: Remote Zoom/ FaceTime lessons offered!

I maintain a private studio in San Mateo, and offer violin and viola lessons to children and adults of all ages and levels. Skype lessons are also available for intermediate and advanced students.

Using a mixture of Suzuki, traditional and non-traditional pedagogies, I aim to adapt my teaching to each student’s unique personality, learning style and individual goals. Proper technique and a solid foundation are important focuses, but more important to me is helping a student to find the joy in playing music, learning a new skill, instiling a life long appreciation for the arts and self expression.

Music lessons are about much more than learning an instrument. Learning and instrument can contribute greatly to the following skills:

*developing routine and discipline

*focus

*Attention to detail

* Overcoming set backs

*Pushing through nerves (through performing)

*working towards long term goals

* A sense of accomplishment

*Ability to focus on the journey and not the destination

*Learning to accept feedback

*Confidence

*Sense of accomplishment

Learning an instrument has been shown to have many benefits for children and studies prove that learning and instrument improves math, reading and language skills. No other activity uses as much of the brain as playing music!

“That’s why signing kids up for piano lessons or sports is so important. It has nothing to do with creating a good musician or a five-year-old soccer star,” said Heatherton. “When you learn to force yourself to practice for an hour or run fifteen laps, you start building self-regulatory strength. A five-year-old who can follow the ball for ten minutes becomes a sixth grader who can start his homework on time.”

Music enhances the education of our children by helping them to make connections and broadening the depth with which they think and feel. If we are to hope for a society of culturally literate people, music must be a vital part of our children’s education.
